For the primary purpose of keeping in shape and letting some daily stress out, I've been hitting an 80 lb. heavy bag for about 7 months. I started with a pair of gel padded 8 oz. practice gloves and they were fine for about a month - but my hands were not. I'm 51 and my hands started to feel like they were the arthritic hands of a 71 year old. At least 4 or 5 of my knuckles were stoved at all times. It got to the point where I resisted hitting the bag with full force. If I did, my hands would pay for it the next day. So I wised up and bought a pair of leather Pro Impact gloves. I purchased the 16 oz. gloves because my fingers screamed at me to do it. For the last 2 months, I've been hitting the heavy bag at full force, for about 30 minutes a session, and my fingers are almost completely healed.
At first, I actually noticed my rotator cuffs in my shoulders aching a little because of the added weight of the gloves. Believe it or not, it was harder to hold the gloves up...at first. My shoulders quickly strengthened and I'm back at full speed.
I work out in my garage. In the summer, I sweat like you'd expect...especially my hands. One would think that the inside of the gloves might get a little funky. But no, they dry fast and have no smell at all.
