Park Tool Professional Race Stand - PRS-15 Review

Park Tool Professional Race Stand - PRS-15Nice bike stand. It's bigger than I thought it would be, so "portable" in that you can fold it up unlike those old park shop stands, but you aren't going to want to lug this thing around much. The jaws are nicely padded and will fit nearly any tube.

If you have a bike with tight clearances and a short seat post tube you might prefer a stand like the PRS-20 which holds the bike via the front fork and the bottom bracket. For my kids collection of bikes, this stand works better.

Pros:
You can really get the bike up where you are working on it. Once in the stand, if you can lift the bike, you can un-clamp the main post and slide it up then re-clamp the support tube in place.

The main clamp opens really really wide. I don't think there is a bike frame wider than this clamp could hold.

The main clamp rotates easily once the bike is in place. If you clamp the bike near the center of gravity (mid top tube) you can easily rotate the bike so that the part you are working on is right in front of you.

The black plastic clamps on the big legs hold the little legs in place so that they don't flop around when you carry it.

The little legs are adjustable so that the surface doesn't have to be perfectly smooth to get this thing to be stable. You know what parking lots can be like, so this thing adjusts to the surface. (Which it needs the adjustable legs having 4 legs vs 3.)

Cons:
Big, even when folded up. Get the storage bag if you plan on folding it up and putting it anywhere or taking it to your races.

Expensive vs the other good stands, so watch for sales, they do come around from time to time.

The set screws in the base are going to scratch this thing up. They didn't sleeve the base so when you tighten the knurled handle at the bottom to hold the feet out, it will eventually mar the finish. But hey, this thing is a tool that is meant to be used, not some more bicycle art. (Well if it's art, I suspect you won't be getting any grease on it because you won't be actually repairing any bicycles...)

It's a little more tricky to operate the main clamp with one hand than the old style park clamps. There is a lever under the tightening wheel that you flip one way and pull the clamp open, insert the bike tube holding it up off the bottom of the clamp, then push the clamp closed, release the lever with your thumb and start tightening the clamping wheel. Carbon frames, easy does it.

Still a fine piece of equipment.
